Postcard Marketing Is Inexpensive And Effective

By Deborah Sullivan

Starting a new business is risky, expensive, and stressful. Most owners budget carefully and count every penny. Spending money on advertising is not optional, and even though you need a good website to draw customers, if you are targeting local clientele, you will also need something personal to draw them to your shop or office. Postcard marketing is a great, inexpensive way to do that.

When every dollar counts, it is good to know you can advertise for pennies since postcards are so cheap to print and mail. Over sized cards may cost slightly more, but they are still a good value. Glossy brochures may be outside your budget, but colorful postcards with good copy and interesting offers will catch the attention of readers. You will have to obtain a current mailing list however.

When you're on a tight budget, you need to have a good imagination. Postcards don't just have to be for mailing. You could use them as business cards left on the counters of local establishments. If you add a hole, you can use them for hang tags. They also work well at trade shows and local events where you can rent a booth and display cards outlining the services you provide.

Because they don't cost much, you might use them to do some market testing. You might try an offer on a small group of residents to measure the success. If you get a good percentage of response, you can expand your reach and send the cards to a wider audience. Not everything is going to work. Testing with inexpensive mailers is a way to keep costs down and still learn what your target audience responds well to.

When you have a great advertising idea, you want to keep the particulars out of the hands of your competition for as long as possible. If you do an initial mailing before putting your promotion online or in the newspapers, you will get ahead of your competitors. You can learn a lot from what they are doing. They will certainly keep tabs on your success.

In order to make an impact on your target audience, you have to get in front of them over and over. It won't do you any good to send one mailer. You have to follow up consistently until they begin to recognize you and your brand. This is a great way to get your name out, and when you are successful, you will steadily gain customers.

Brochures are often large and bulky. They can end up in files or in the trash because they take up valuable space on a desk or counter. Postcards, on the other hand, are small and easily tucked into a drawer or purse. People tend to keep mailers that can be redeemed for discounts or special offers if presented at the point of purchase. Limited time offers are great ways to get customers into your store.

Starting a business is hard, and a lot of people fail. Many times they fail because they don't spend the money to effectively get the attention of potential customers. There are inexpensive ways to maximize your exposure, if you have enough imagination.
